A shipwreck unearthed in my town?? No way?!

It's been in the news the past few weeks, and yes I was fortunate enough to see pieces of the infamous shipwreck with my own eyes.  You can read the story yourself here, but I'll just say this early 1800's ship has been under the sand for over 150 years while thousands of beachgoers enjoyed their hot summer days without having a clue what was under them.

The image above was on the cover of the Asbury Park Press two weeks ago, and as soon as I saw it I started collecting the clippings to try and figure out its exact location.  According to one article "because the windlass sits on top, there is more beneath the sand – such as cargo or even gold." How cool is that? I had to wait a few days until a few people were free to explore the beaches with me. A few friends and I set out with our hot chocolates and thermals to find remants of the Ayrshire. We knew it would probably be blocked off, but doubted it'd be guarded. We were lucky enough to find it, but it was the last possible day to see the pieces before they were sent out to be studied.

We got there just in time- the pieces were being unearthed and put into a storage unit.  We didn't see much, except one expert of some kind was studying each piece and even smelled the wood. I wish I could've gotten a closer look! Daimon kept teasing me with pieces of wood on the beach that we could come home with a piece of the ship.

It's so awesome that people are taking the time to study this and to put the construction of this ridiculous wall on hold.  Meanwhile... a short distance away...
