I'll be featuring a local band every month, and this month's band goes to my very own- Elevator Art. I've been playing in Elevator Art since 2008, and every year we've added another new member. This 6-piece band practices in Toms River NJ and we've played some great shows- we opened for Jefferson Starship, Jon Herrington of Steely Dan, and played a sold out Stone Pony show with Brick & Mortar and River City Extension (the only sold out local show in Stone Pony history). It's been fun, I've learned a lot about how to work with a variety of people, and most importantly, how to play an instrument that I was originally unfamiliar with: the bass. We wrote 2 albums together, Tent City being the most recent. You can purchase the cd and hear the songs here. The artwork for the album was painted by Josh Matson, and the album was recorded at Eight16 Recording Studio.
1.Don’t ever go to a live performance unless you’re willing to be a part of the band.
2. 3 full car loads of band equipment up and down a basement flight of stairs is not as much fun as it sounds but it's worth it when you see what we do with all the stuff during our live sets!
3.What the hell does “Elevator Art” mean? To sum it up it’s all about bringing the audience and the stage to the same level. The elevator symbolizes your life and the art is what you show for yourself before you get off. Elevator Art hopes to leave a communal impression on its audience before the show is over.
How did it all start? Well, it all started at the Ocean County Vocational School in an art class- we were all friends, but also band hoppin' until we finally joined forces. Our sound evolved every year, but consistantly stayed in the category of progressive pop. After coming ashore from their nautical and oceanic based self titled from 2010 and venturing onto dry land, in their “Tent City EP” in 2011, you can start to notice a trend occurring in there steadily evolving discography that could potentially foreshadow the next EP that is rumored to be released later this year. So for now lets just say that Elevator Art will be looking for some answers in their search for the truth in the next ep this fall.
I think my favorite part of the band experience was playing shows and becoming apart of a huge creative community. I go to shows to support other bands, and we seem to get a similar support. I get that mom feeling- I'm so proud of my friends, they're all so talented!! It's so much fun, my weekends are always busy and the I genuinely enjoy the music that's coming from Ocean and Monmouth counties. I've been organizing benefit shows lately: August 12th my band is playing amongst 9 other bands at the Tent City Benefit show (more info here) and on December 9th at the Asbury Lanes for Ocean's Harbor House. Come out and support local music!
