MOTH BAIT!

Seriously, I have the best summer job in the universe- I work at a bug museum.  Insectropolis in Toms River NJ is a small business owned by a family of artists and naturalists. Just the artistry of the displays are sure to wow even the most squeamish of visitors.  It's so rewarding to work with the young and old who have some really intense fears.  When they can leave the building more informed and even proud of themselves for touching a scorpion or tarantula, that's when I can pat myself on the back.

The staff all have their favorite bugs to talk about to groups, and I can get real nerdy about honey bees and moths. I am so excited to share with you an old 1800s recipe to attract moths within the hour you apply it to your door or other locations outside. The stuff looks like throw up, but it works like a champ!

MOTH BAIT

Can you see the moths in the sugary mess?

All you need is a really ripe banana (nearly brown), half a dark beer, and a heaping cup of dark brown sugar.  Mix it all together with your hand the best you can. Bring the pasty goop outside and smear the stuff near a light.  If you live near the woods, you won't have to wait long. I started seeing moths just 5 minutes after applying. If you live in a neighborhood, it might take some time. Watch a movie and check back. Bring a camera!

These Rosey maples are loving it!
