Thursday, I visited the Schuster Farm to pick through and clean some fiber for spinning. It's very laborious that takes a great deal of patience, but it can also be soothing and process-oriented, similar to embroidery or other crafts. I sat on my newly made tshirt blanket and one by one the ducks started to sit around me. By the late afternoon, I was surrounded by ducks.
My tshirt blanket- so easy to make, and feels so comfortable!
Friday I went to New York just to walk around. My only destination was MMuseumm, a suggested landmark on Atlas Obscura. So, I hopped on the subway at noon and went all the way downtown to see this strange collection of items people have left in elevators over the years. The museum was about the size of my bathroom.
From there, I walked through China Town, ate a cannoli in Little Italy (I couldn't resist, the cafe boasted "The best cannoli on planet earth"), stopped at a few interesting stores along the way, and spun some yarn in Union Square. Any time I spend more than an hour in union square, there's some new connection I make or story worth sharing with friends. This time, a banjo player asked if he could play me a song, and of course I was enthusiastic about it. Shortly after he started playing, a group of people surrounded us, even kids were dancing around, and people were handing me money. I guess we looked like a couple? Only in New York....
It was the perfect weather on Friday to relax in union square, but I started to get that itch to walk around in the Strand Book Store, which kept me entertained for a few hours. I read all kinds of books on Egon Schiele, Cave paintings, the history of Photography, a great retrospective on Dorothea Lange, spinning, and this weird one- "The Sick Rose": The art of Medical Illustration in the 1800s.
This was drawn to show what the patient looked like only an hour after contracting the disease.
The moment I returned to the Port Authority, I was seconds away from missing the bus home, and CAUGHT IT. man, that feels good every time!
After walking all day, exploring manhattan, I decided to spend the evening in Asbury Park to see a few friends play. It was a rejuvenating day, that left me feeling so excited to enjoy the rest of the summer.
Saturday night was so perfect, playing music in the backyard of an old Montclair victorian house with a few girls who really know how to harmonize, including the singer from Golden Oak, a touring band from Maine. We had so much fun sharing the ukelele and singing along to each other's music, and a few of the guys even hopped in to add some spoken word.
Annnnnddd Sunday. It was too fitting to take my french grandmother out for a french lunch. She said, " I have 15 dollars, order whatever you want and we'll share." We enjoyed a lemon/ honey crepe for $3, a berry crepe, two iced coffees and an insanely good herb quiche.
My cousin met up with me in the Montclair Book store, down the road from the french restaurant and snapped this picture.
The weekend was nearly over, and my wallet was nearly empty when my aunt asked if I could see her comedy show since I was in the area anyway. During the show, a few silly items were raffled and they pulled my name to win a tall can of potato chips. I yelled out from the back of the packed venue, "No thanks, you can pull someone else's name". Well... did that give some comedians material.... For the rest of the night, any comedian who had a routine on dieting and their weight could not go on with their act without pointing to the girl who gave up a free can of chips.
